Colombia achieved a historic qualification and have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup by defeating Jamaica 1-0 during the Round of 16, a team that hadn’t conceded any goals in the tournament.
This is the first time Colombia has reached the third round quarter-finals in a major women’s football tournament, and they will now face England, a favorite to win the cup, next Saturday.
Colombia is the only CONMEBOL team still in contention in the Australia and New Zealand World Cup, and Jamaica was the last CONCACAF team in the tournament.
“It’s a national pride, a regional pride, knowing that we are worthy representatives of Colombia, of South America. We stand as the team representing the Americas, and that’s gratifying for us as the coaching staff,” said coach Nelson Abadía.
The Colombian team faced difficulties dealing with the physical play of the Jamaican players, who defended their territory with strength and some rough play.
Jamaica’s coach, Lorne Donaldson, acknowledged that “Colombia played better, they deserved to win.”
Regarding the upcoming Saturday match, Abadía admitted, “England is one of the favorites, the reigning European champion. But we faced Germany with wisdom, with the strength of our game and our players,” Abadía recalled the 2-1 victory against Germany in the group stage.
