The Mayor’s Office, through the Urban Development Company (Edubar), is rapidly advancing the beach recovery effort at Puerto Mocho, allowing locals and visitors to gaze at the Caribbean Sea and delight in the marvelous landscape and activities the beach will offer. Enjoying the only urban beach in Barranquilla will soon become a reality for residents.

The most recent Edubar report revealed that the project has reached 65% completion. The most significant progress has been in terms of foundation, excavation, filling, cabin assembly, and other aspects.

To execute the project, Puerto Mocho was divided into zones. The first zone featured wooden dining areas, along with masonry work for hydrosanitary networks in bathrooms, wooden kitchen walls, sales points, storage rooms, electrical rooms, and administration.

Meanwhile, in the second zone, which will also have wooden dining areas, work is underway on the installation of hydrosanitary networks, the construction of shower walls, and the installation and assembly of kitchens and sales points.

Upon completion of the project, the beach will be divided into three zones:

1. The active zone, located at the shoreline and exclusively for swimmers.

2. The sports zone for activities like Kitesurf, Surf, Paddle Surf, and other water sports.

3. The rest area, which will be occupied by tents and cabañas.

3a. And the service zone, where all the beach facilities will be located.

Advantages of the project

Apart from attracting local, national, and international tourism, which will boost the local economy, one of the benefits will be that the food vendors will have sewage, water, and electricity for the first time. This will dignify their work and enable them to provide better service because they won’t need to use firewood for cooking, and they will no longer discharge wastewater into the marshlands or the sea.

These improvements in public utility services align with one of Mayor Jaime Pumarejo’s key goals regarding beach recovery, which is to promote environmental awareness, a sense of ownership, and the responsible care of the beach to ensure its long-lasting preservation.
