The Tayrona National Natural Park and the four indigenous tribes native to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: Arhuaco (Iku), Kogui (Kággaba), Wiwa, and Kankuamo are preparing for the third closure of the year known as the Season of Thanksgiving or Nabbatashi. The period of rest will take place between October 19 and November 2, 2023.

During the closure, the park will strengthen actions that contribute to the conservation of the protected area. At the same time, indigenous communities will continue their own practices of giving back to and healing the sacred space.

During this #RespiraTayrona period, park rangers will carry out activities such as installing cameras for species recording and research tasks; Prevention, Surveillance, and Control (PVC) actions; Environmental Education, Ecotourism, and more.

Actions that contribute to the conservation of the protected area will also be strengthened. In addition, the indigenous peoples will continue their own practice of giving back to and healing the sacred space.

The Subprogram of Hydrobiological Resources will conduct maintenance of coral nurseries, coral restoration, gamete collection for sexual reproduction, monitoring, and lionfish extraction, among other activities.

On October 20th, a cleaning event will take place simultaneously in 16 sectors of Tayrona Park. This will cover approximately 6,000 meters of beach, starting from Punta Venado to the mouth of the Piedras River. Entities, institutions, and conservation partners will join this event.

During the closure, the park will also hold dialogues, training sessions, and exchange of experiences with indigenous peoples and service providers from different sectors to deepen the understanding of territorial pedagogy.

Colombia’s National Natural Parks and the four indigenous tribes invite citizens to respect the #RespiraTayrona or “Nabbatashi” period. They also invite everyone to share messages on social media about the protected area, recalling pleasant or meaningful moments experienced in different sectors and expressing gratitude to the Tayrona National Natural Park.
