In 2024, Triple A is leading the A4 Solar program, which aims to introduce solar panels to homes in Barranquilla. The initiative seeks to harness the city’s solar power potential for electricity generation, and the project has already started with the installation of solar panels in Manuel Cid Gámez’s home in the Villa Carolina neighborhood. As a result, Cid Gámez has experienced significant reductions in energy bills due to this sustainable solution.

Mayor Jaime Pumarejo emphasized the importance of transitioning Barranquilla into a “biodiverse-city” by utilizing renewable energy sources like solar power. He highlighted the Caribbean region’s potential to become a significant energy hub through wind, solar, and offshore natural gas resources.

How did the project begin?

Since October of the previous year, a team from Triple A began a new approach to address the needs of users in areas beyond water supply, sewerage, and waste management.

“As part of the sustainability strategy framed in a diversified portfolio of new services for our customers, Triple A offers this alternative of renewable energy and thereby reaffirms our commitment to the environment,” stated Jairo de Castro, the company’s manager.

Project Phases

The A4 Solar program is divided into three phases. The pilot phase involved understanding the model’s workings and ensuring accessibility, competitiveness, and efficiency. In the second phase, 50 eligible homes will benefit from the technology, provided they meet certain criteria. The final phase aims to extend the benefits to a minimum of 3,500 households.

How can I Participate?

To participate in the program, customers must meet specific criteria. They need to be property owners, listed on the Triple A bill, and have a favorable credit score. Additionally, their homes must meet certain roof and electrical installation conditions for the solar panels.

An investment of approximately $2.7 billion COP is being made in the initial year, covering personalized installations of solar panels for the selected 50 residences in Barranquilla. Importantly, participants aren’t required to make a significant upfront investment. Instead, they will sign a 15-year contract covering the kilowatt/hour rate and all aspects of the system’s operation, supply, installation, and maintenance.

The goal, according to Triple A’s manager, is to progressively expand installation capacity and offer this opportunity to a larger number of households starting in 2024.

Why is Barranquilla ideal for Solar Energy Generation?

Triple A states that Barranquilla’s climatic conditions position the city as an “ideal location” for generating solar energy. They emphasize that the flat geography simplifies the installation of panels, enabling a swift and efficient system implementation.

Moreover, Barranquilla benefits from abundant sunlight, guaranteeing approximately 200 days of panel operation each year.
