Barranquilla to receive Pan American Games flag during Santiago closing ceremony

A delegation from Colombia departed from Barranquilla last Thursday, November 2nd, headed for Santiago, Chile, where they will receive the Pan American Games flag at the closing ceremony. The 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games are currently taking place in Santiago de Chile. Barranquilla will receive the flag during the closing ceremony on Sunday, November 5th, as the host of the 2027 Pan American Games.

Mónica Lindo de las Salas, the dancing director in charge of the cultural presentation for this significant event, stated that the show “is an image in which we represent the most characteristic folk elements from each of the regions of our country, Colombia. We culminate in our Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, which is the Barranquilla Carnival.”

She also noted that on stage, “we will have the participation of a cast of twenty people from the dance company of the Barranquilla Cultural Corporation. The Luis Soto dance company will also be joining us. We will be accompanied by the musical group Los Chamanes, directed by Robinson Liñán.”

In detail, the delegation consists of 5 members from the musical group Los Chamanes, 3 dancers from the Luis Soto dance company, 9 dancers from Danzas Mónica Lindo, 1 artistic director, 1 carnival logistics coordinator, and the Queen of the Barranquilla Carnival 2024, Melissa Cure Villa.

The performance involves a cultural journey through Colombia, showcasing the most characteristic rhythms of each region, culminating in the Barranquilla Carnival. UNESCO has declared the Barranquilla Carnival an Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is widely regarded as one of the top 5 carnivals in the world.
