Puerto Colombia will be home to the glass infrastructure project that will become the tallest lighthouse in Colombia.
Tecnoglass is building a megastructure, which includes the world’s tallest commemorative lighthouse, and they expect to complete it in November.
The 70-meter-tall structure with over 2,000 square meters of glass rises in a 50-meter-diameter roundabout near the Caribbean Sea shore. This imposing monument will honor the immigrants who arrived in the territory in the early 20th century.
The lighthouse will pay tribute to the immigration that began in 1888 when the country’s first maritime terminal was inaugurated.
The design comes from the brothers James and Alays Ariza Barraza, who hail from Santa Marta. They conceived the geometric shape of the structure to feature eight different shades of blue to create an artistic gradient.
Christian Daes, co-founder of Tecnoglass, stated on his Twitter account, “The glass will ascend to a height of 70 meters, symbolizing the point of entry into Colombia, which was Puerto Colombia, and showcasing the world’s most beautiful beaches.” The project should be ready to be inaugurated in mid-November 2023.
In the second week of October, the project will reach its culmination with the installation of the final pieces. This remarkable achievement was accomplished in just 180 days with the dedicated effort of over 80 individuals.
The monument created by the Tecnoglass company will serve as a guide for vessels. Stephan Chahin, the project supervisor, stated that the lighthouse will be a screen of lights and colors. The Puerto Colombia lighthouse will host significant celebrations on its adjacent beach, covering an area of three hectares.
Tecnoglass installed the beacon on top of the lighthouse on Sunday, October 22nd.
Yearly Celebrations
Furthermore, the site will be a popular location for celebrating important national holidays.
“On December 31, this structure will count down the 12 seconds before the New Year change in a multicolored celebration that will become the monument marking the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one,” mentioned Daes on the same radio network.
The Government of Atlántico is actively supporting and endorsing this project, viewing it as a perfect complement to the northern beach area of the port. This particular zone is undergoing development with the aim of transforming it into Colombia’s largest outdoor event space, capitalizing on its prime location.
The new development complex will include hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and high-quality residences. It will transform the region into a first-class tourist destination. This glass lighthouse will illuminate the skyline and remind visitors of the history of immigration in the region.
This new construction will join the two previously donated works by Tecnoglass: “La Ventana al Mundo” and “La Ventana de Campeones.”
Christian Daes will open a call on his X account for users to collaborate in giving the project an official name. The project’s current nickname is “La Ventana de Sueños” (The Window of Dreams).
