Barranquilla es Río is a new initiative by the Alcaldía de Barranquilla.
Barranquilla is known in the Colombian Caribbean for its colorful Carnival. Now local authorities aim for the city to be recognized for the activities that tourists can enjoy on the Magdalena River.
The Alcaldía announced on Friday the return of ‘Barranquilla es Río’. This activity will take place at the Gran Malecón with 50 boats sailing on the Magdalena River. This new initiative will take place on the last Saturday of every month.
The river route will feature 50 boats for Barranquilla residents and visitors to explore the Magdalena River, accessing various tourist packages offered by the city’s marinas.
According to Mayor Alejandro Char, ‘Barranquilla es Río’ aims to promote the city through cultural, gastronomic, and recreational offerings to encourage family gatherings around this natural jewel of the city.
“It’s wonderful to embrace the entire Gran Malecón with activities that promote family gatherings, and how beautiful it is with actions like these that allow people to enjoy a day full of dynamism and recreation.”
Meanwhile, Rear Admiral John Henry Ruíz Murcia, commander of the Naval Garrison of Barranquilla of the Colombian Navy, stated that in terms of security, “the Colombian Navy will be present to maintain comprehensive maritime and river security, ensuring the safe departure of boats, and providing continuous support to safeguard the lives and integrity of participants in this important event that positions Barranquilla as a river tourism destination.”
