The host for the 2027 Pan-American Games was confirmed.
After the parties reached an agreement, they made the announcement for the upcoming edition of the continental event.
Amid the Pan-American gathering taking place in Santiago, the Chilean capital, they confirmed the news that had been circulating as a rumor. In an official announcement that follows nearly two months of anticipation, they designated Colombia as the official host for the 2027 Pan-American Games.
In this context, the Colombian Minister of Sports, Astrid Bibiana RodrÃguez, said: “Panam Sports confirmed it to us, and it’s a very important decision for our country because it is the continent’s premier multisport event.” Colombia last hosted the Pan-American Games in 1971.
Cost to host and economic benefits
The Ministry of Sports specified that the Colombian government will provide 60% of the total budget of $399 million dollars, and local authorities in Barranquilla and the designated sub-venues will cover the remaining 40%.
The hosting of these games will have a significant impact at the local level, generating sports development and economic and social benefits for the population of Barranquilla and all of Colombia. We expect approximately 7,000 athletes from 41 countries to participate, competing in 34 sports over a 17-day period.
“Colombia, Barranquilla, and the Colombian Caribbean have confirmed their role as hosts of the 2027 Pan-American Games. This is big news for the sports industry,” expressed the President of the Colombian Olympic Committee (COC), Ciro Solano.
President of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic, announced the confirmation in Santiago. Ilic emphasized that he received a letter signed by the Colombian Minister of Sports, Bibiana RodrÃguez, the Mayor of Barranquilla, Jaime Pumarejo, the COC, and the Colombian government, confirming the fulfillment of the established requirements.
Barranquilla will receive the flag during the closing ceremony on Sunday, November 5th, as the host of the 2027 Pan American Games.
Colombia participated in the 2023 Pan-American Games in Santiago and held sixth place in the medal standings.
