AIPH recently announced that Barranquilla is a recipient of a Certificate of Merit for the World Green City Awards 2024.
The World Green City 2024 selected Barranquilla alongside cities such as Tel Aviv (Israel), Belo Horizonte (Brazil), and Saint Lazare (Canada). Barranquilla ranks among the top 5 cities in the world promoting urban agriculture.
Barranquilla received the Certificate of Merit World Green City Award after Mayor Alejandro Char presented the BAQ-Cultiva project. This project strengthens forestry and urban agriculture by actively involving the community in building a greener and more sustainable city.
“Barranquilla celebrates this international recognition, which motivates us to continue working towards making a more sustainable city that connects us with the world, contributing our best practices in environmental projects such as urban agriculture and its benefits to our communities,” said the mayor.
The nomination came through the Technical Panel and Jury of The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), which recognizes Barranquilla’s efforts to highlight public policies focused on the sustainable use of plants and natural resources, as well as their impact on the community, like BAQ-Cultiva.
Mayor Alejandro Char Chaljub will receive the award on behalf of the city at the World Green City Awards ceremony in the Netherlands. The awards ceremony will be held on September 25, 2024, at the Future Green City World Congress.
